Ramadan Reflections

Updated: Jul 17, 2018

“Do not waste water even if you were at a running stream.” Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) ﷺ

This may sound preach-y, but it’s something that’s been lingering on my mind so I thought I’d create this post to remind myself and anyone else who needs it during these last few days of Ramadan. In the past week, I’ve been highly aware of what I’ve been eating at iftar. I came across a tweet the other day, and it’s been resonating with me ever since. It said something along the lines of how we should be grateful for the food we’re able to open our fast with because there are people around the world who fast, but don’t have the luxury of eating whatever they desire. This is because of the lack of resources in that part of the world. I hate to admit it, but fasting sometimes brings out the worst in me (and yes I’m well aware it should do the opposite). I’ll be cranky and or “hangry” all day and I can be really short-tempered with my family. What usually gets me through the day is the excitement of what I’m going to eat at iftar. When I read that tweet, I instantly felt embarrassed and a bit pathetic. However, it grounded me almost immediately. I was starting to forget the whole point of Ramadan and I felt ashamed. Too often, we take basic necessities for granted such as food and water. This holy month is supposed to reiterate and reemphasize in our lives how blessed we are to even have access to such things. I hope you’re able to find solace these last 10 days. Too often, we take too much for granted. It’s important to remember that everything we have can easily be taken away from us. So make an abundance of duas, repent heavily for your sins, but also thank God a million fold for this beautiful life He’s blessed us with.
