I realize classic is a subjective term. Just because I think these are classic Bollywood movies, doesn't mean you will too. Nonetheless, most of you will probably agree some of these movies never get old. I've either grown up with these films and/or they've impacted me in some way. So go get warm and cozy. It's time to BINGE. Honestly though, if you haven't seen some of these, I highly recommend each and every one of them. (BTW the list is in order of year released)
1. Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)
I consider this the baseline of every Bollywood movie released after this. A lot of story lines mimic this film's story which is why I consider it such a classic. But most movies with SRK and Kajol are usually nothing less than classic. The epitome of love and romance, it makes you feel all warm and fuzzy.
2. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)
It's so unbelievably cheesy, I know BUT if you grew up on this movie then you know. To be fair, it's an extremely cute and hilarious movie. The songs and the characters... this movie feels like home. Too much nostalgia.
3. Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1998)
The aesthetic of a Sanjay Leela Bhansali film is everything. The colors, the sets, the outfits. Ash at her prime. This was a pretty movie to watch.
4. Taal (1999)
If anything, watch this movie for the soundtrack! A.R. Rahman is a true genius. The whole movie is based around the art of music so it makes sense as to why the soundtrack goes so hard.
5. Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999)
If you want a feel good film with minimal conflict, this one's it! Every time I get sad, I watch this movie. It's just an all around happy movie, and the actors/outfits are so aesthetically pleasing to look at. Not gonna lie, it's also pretty cheesy but it's worth all it's cheesiness.
6. Mohabbatein (2000)
I think my favorite thing about the movie is it's story line. There are several love stories, and each one is just as captivating as the next! This film has a colorful spark about it.
7. Yaadein (2001)
Nostalgia AF. I'm pretty sure this is one of my all time favorite movies. It's a little more on the serious side but Kareena and Hrithik are my forever faves.
8. Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001)
You can't have a Bollywood classics list without this movie. It's probably the movie I've seen most on this list. We own the DVD so I'd watch it every single day when I was growing up. It is EVERYTHING. It has EVERYTHING. It'll make you laugh, cry and fall in love all at the same time.
9. Saathiya (2002)
Another one of my absolute favorite movies, and I think it has a lot to do with the fact that it not only shows you the "happy-falling in love" phase, but also what comes after and the struggles to keep a relationship afloat. They also did make a very cute couple.
10. Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003)
A generation classic. This movie was woke for it's time. Although a comedic masterpiece, this movie will have you crying for days (it's worth the tears though).
11. Vivah (2006)
A movie about falling in love through your engagement time period. This movie is underrated, and I don't think a lot of people have seen it. It's such an innocent and sweet yet powerful love story.
12. Jab We Met (2007)
Kareena Kapoor's acting in this movie is next level. Imtiaz Ali has an interesting way of telling stories, and this was no less. There's also countless life lessons throughout the film so you may even learn a thing or two.
13. Yeh Jawaani Hai Dewaani (2013)
The epitome of a Bollywood movie. Also one of the most relatable. The characters are so warm and fuzzy you feel as if you're friends with each and every one of them. It's a unique twist on friendship and love- but most importantly self discovery.
14. Dil Dhadakne Do (2015)
I LOVE this movie. I've yet to get tired of it. The ensemble cast, cruise in the Mediterranean sea, and the amount of WOKE this movie has. You can relate to almost every character. It portrays very real issues Desi families deal with but in a comedic way. If you haven't seen it please watch it!
15. Kapoor and Sons (2016)
I think this movie is SO underrated. Despite it being a serious story with delicate issues, the movie's comic relief is spot on. It's not over the top, but it still feels like a fun movie. Of course, it gets very serious, and the issues discussed in the film are intense. It's an important movie for everyone to watch.
I'll probably do a part two to this soon because I have too many faves. But until then, happy binging!
-love Sof
